How wearable devices can change the workplace

Wearable devices are becoming more and more widespread with smart bracelets and smart watches, even smart glasses being available for purchase. Research says that by the time we turn to the year 2020, around 13 million wearable devices will be integrated even into corporations’ lives and will become an important part of those companies’ strategies.

These gadgets are not only useful in our private lives, as they can enhance our productivity at work, as well. Some companies already implemented these solutions into their daily routines, and they report multiple advantages. Although using wearable devices may seem all roses, there are some issues we need to think about when implementing them. First and most importantly, there is privacy. These gadgets collect tremendous amounts of data about each and every employee who use them. It is important to check the device providers’ privacy policies and make a transparent policy of yours, so that every user can know where their data is going and who’s going to use it.

Increase employees’ efficiency: by using health and productivity tracking apps on these wearable devices, employees are constantly aware of their performance, which can push them even further during the days.

Track their movement, make them healthier: wearable devices provide accurate data for every employee about their physical activities, and as an employer you can encourage them to take walks every now and then during work. Movement and activities boost concentration and productivity, and gives a good feeling to the employee.

Better employee engagement: these wearables come with a bunch of apps that can be used for corporate goals. Every employee can have their own virtual assistant to keep track of their daily tasks and duties, and mark these tasks as “done” is an encouraging visual feedback for the employees, resulting in better overall employee satisfaction.

Use wearables in the HR processes: in 2014 smart glasses were said to be a pioneer gadget to help HR in recruiting and assessment. Although smart glasses haven’t lived up to the expectations just yet, there are other market leading wearable devices which have. These tools give HR managers constant access to information about candidates and help collaboration among the HR department. Speaking of recruitment, newly hired employees can fit in much easier and quicker when they have training material (literally) at their hands.

Promote healthy living: healthy employees have lower healthcare costs, they lose fewer days from work and they are more likely to stay at the company for the long term if their employer has a well fitness and wellness program.
