10 things you should never say in a job interview

Job interviews are stressful, and it is very easy to believe that the HR manager is our good friend. Some recruiters are really good at getting useful information out of the candidates, even though they’d better wanted to keep those as a secret. You can easily expose yourself during phone or personal interviews without even realising it. Liz Ryan from Human Workplace collects 10 things you should never say during an interview.

1. I'm especially excited about this job because it's so close to my house: no need to say, this statement from you will weaken your negotiating leverage, and you can easily find yourself a lower starting salary offer.

2. My partner and I are trying to get pregnant or adopt a child: it is none of the employer’s business. Deal with this when it comes to it, and don’t make an office issue from it in advance.

3. If I come to work here, I need some time off in a few months for exploratory surgery: it can happen to anybody at basically any times. Anyone may need medical treatment for some unexpected health issues.

4. I plan to go to grad school full-time in a few years, or…

5. Eventually, I want to start my own company: do not share these plans while you are interviewing for a full time job.

6. My spouse just got a fantastic new job, or…

7. I'm still earning good money from patents at my last job: these statements also weaken your negotiating leverage, as letting the HR manager and the future employer that you are in a favourable financial situation will end up in getting a lower salary offer.

8. Of all the jobs I'm being considered for, this is the one I really want: just say you are very interested in this job.

9. If I can work from home two mornings a week I can accept a lower salary: don’t give away your negotiating power by offering to take a lower salary for something that your employer should give you anyway.

10. I'm so looking forward to not job-hunting anymore: just don’t say that you can’t wait to be done with your job search.
